Best Selling Crafts

At nearly every craft forum I visit online, I hear one question repeated time and again, “What are the best selling crafts?” Well, there is no clear cut answer to this question, but that doesn’t mean you can’t apply a bit of logic to determine what ought to be a popular selling craft.

First of all, do you really want to try to sell what the best selling craft is? Doesn’t it stand to reason that if it is the best selling craft, that the competition will be much stiffer in this field? So really what most of us are looking for is a craft that will fill all of the following criteria:

  • will not have too much competition
  • will be enjoyable to create
  • I can make uniquely my own
  • I won’t grow tired of creating
  • fill a market niche
  • can be sold with a reasonable profit
  • are structurally sound enough that customers will be happy with them long term

There are probably many other factors that can be considered when pondering the question of what are the best selling crafts, but it really comes down to finding what is right for you. The most important factor being that it needs to be something that you are passionately motivated to create.

Below are some craft topics that I think do well or can do well depending on your approach.

Bath and Body Products – Luxurious spa products are a trend that continues to rise. People like to have fancy soaps and lotions in their guest bathrooms and send as gifts. Bath and body products are popular across a broad range of consumers (primarily women), including teenagers, young professionals, moms and business women.

Accessories – Purses, belts, hats, gloves and other accessories are hot with the younger crowd that are looking to express their individuality. Quirky accessories can appeal to teens, while more sophisticated looks may do better for a more mature crowd. Don’t forget kids’ accessories.

Jewelry – Always popular, jewelry is probably one of the most competitive craft markets out there. If you want to specialize in this category it is important to find a niche within it and also find some way to make your jewelry special or unique so that it is not lost among the countless other jewelry makers.

Garden Art – As more people devote time to creating “outdoor rooms” they want to fill those spaces with fun art and furnishings. Outdoor accents may provide the perfect craft business solution for crafters that enjoy these types of crafts.

Eco-Friendly Crafts – Consumers are becoming more and more concerned with protecting the environment. Crafts that are made with recycled materials and produced with environmentally friendly supplies are becoming more popular and sought after. As it stands right now, I see this as a much untapped marketing niche.

Infants’ and Children’s Crafts – Like jewelry this is and will likely always remain a hot market. Consequently, there will be stiff competition among craft websites in this arena. Remember anytime you create product for children or infants, special care must be taken with regard to safety.

These are just a few areas that I think could make a successful business. Above all with any business, finding something you are passionate about and willing to work at is essential. It may not guarantee success, but it at least improves your odds.
